Description
This hand-carved stone seal is fashioned from mottled soapstone, specifically a variety of Shoushan stone. The material displays natural variations in color including reddish-brown, tan, and grey-green tones. The finial is carved in high relief and openwork, depicting a bird, possibly a phoenix, amidst floral or cloud motifs. The body of the seal is a polished square column. The base features an incised four-character mark in seal script (zhuanshu) arranged in a two-by-two grid. Residual red cinnabar ink is visible within the characters and in the crevices of the upper carving. 3.5 in high
