Description
This 16-piece nativity set is attributed to mid-twentieth-century Japanese manufacture and includes hand-painted composition figurines and a coordinating stable. The set depicts a traditional nativity scene featuring the Holy Family with the infant Jesus in a separate manger, a kneeling angel, two standing Wise Men, and three shepherds. The shepherds are depicted in various poses, including one figure holding a lamb and two figures kneeling in prayer. The assortment of animal figures includes a recumbent camel with a red saddle, an ox, a donkey, and three small sheep mounted on green-painted bases. The figurines are constructed from painted plaster or composition, a material commonly referred to as chalkware. The stable is made of composite wood or chipboard with a coarse, textured cork-like application and features a peaked roof with a star-shaped cutout on the front gable. While visually consistent with sets produced in Japan during the 1950s and 1960s, no manufacturer marks are visible on the pieces.
