14.5×8.5×9 This is an antique wooden ammunition shipping crate manufactured by the Western Cartridge Company of East Alton, Illinois. The crate is of nailed wood construction and features a central internal vertical divider. The exterior panels are stenciled in black and red ink. The front and back panels are marked LOADED SHOT SHELLS, Western WORLD CHAMPION AMMUNITION, and WESTERN CARTRIDGE COMPANY / SMALL ARMS AMMUNITION ::: MADE IN U.S.A. The side panels indicate the original contents were 500 rounds of 16-gauge, 2 9/16-inch Western SUPER LONG RANGE LOAD shot shells containing 1 1/8 oz of number 6 chilled shot. Specific technical markings include 1 1/8 – 6 CH and S616C. One side panel retains an original paper shipping tag from THE SMITH BROS. HARDWARE CO. / GENERAL HARDWARE / COLUMBUS OHIO. The crate includes recessed finger-grip handles on the side panels for transport.
