Description
19 inches. A large vintage novelty coin bank depicting a seated frog with exaggerated features. The bank is constructed from cast plaster, a material known as chalkware, and is finished with a hand-painted polychrome decorative scheme protected by a high-gloss clear coat. The figure features oversized red eyes with black pupils, a yellow face and chest, and a bright red smile. The chest is embellished with stylized red floral motifs and a black-painted chain-link pattern around the throat. The green body is adorned with dark, circular spots. A coin slot is positioned at the upper back of the head. The underside of the base is unpainted, showing the raw plaster with minor staining and remnants of paint at the margins. No maker’s marks, model numbers, or artist signatures are present. This piece is characteristic of American carnival prizes produced during the mid-20th century.
