Description
This vintage surveying instrument is a transit level produced for the Craftsman brand, a line historically sold by Sears, Roebuck and Co. The device is constructed on a black-painted cast metal frame with a brass telescope barrel and integrated spirit level vials. The instrument features a horizontal graduated circle divided into four 90-degree quadrants and a vertical arc scale for measuring inclines. A decal on the side of the frame is inscribed with Guaranteed Highest Quality, CRAFTSMAN, and REGISTERED U.S. PAT. OFF. The unit is equipped with four brass leveling screws at the base, a telescope focus knob, and a vertical adjustment screw. It is housed in its original fitted wooden transport box, which features a metal top handle, a front latch, and internal felt-padded supports. Two original paper tags, one yellow and one red, remain attached to the instrument with red string.
