Description
61 x75 This hand-quilted utility quilt features a repeating grid of large circular sunburst motifs, identified in American quilting traditions as the Princess Feather pattern. The motifs are hand-appliqu?d in faded red and medium blue cotton fabrics onto alternating squares of cream and light pink. A prominent, contrasting blue hand-sewn blanket stitch finishes the edges of each appliqu?. The entire quilt top is densely hand-quilted in a traditional fan or shell pattern. The reverse side consists of a solid light blue cotton fabric. This piece exhibits a make-do character, utilizing a variety of later fabrics for repairs and binding. The top and bottom borders are finished with a mid-20th-century pictorial novelty print featuring tavern signs and crests with text such as BARTLETT, TAVERN, 1801, and 1906. Side borders include sections of red-and-white checkered gingham and a brown-and-cream floral calico. Several utilitarian patches have been added over time using yellow-and-black plaid and red-and-white checkered fabrics.
