Description
66 x 86 This mid-20th-century hand-pieced quilt top is constructed in a string quilt style, featuring an assortment of cotton fabric scraps including calicos, stripes, ginghams, and novelty prints. The colorful patches are organized into rectangular blocks joined by solid red and yellow cotton sashing strips. The item is an unfinished quilt top, lacking batting, backing, and quilting stitches; the reverse side displays raw seams and the underside of the fabric pieces. Accompanying the textile is a handwritten provenance note featuring two black-and-white family photographs. The note identifies the maker as Gertha Sims Sharp (1898-1989) of Kenton, Tennessee, who was a member of a cotton-farming family. The photographs depict the maker with her mother, Abbie Brown Sims, and with her husband, Sullivan Sharp, and other family members in front of their farmhouse. The provenance is signed by the maker’s granddaughter, Teresa Hicks.
