Antiques Quilts and Toppers
Lot 404:
Description
72 x 74 This is a vintage unfinished quilt top constructed from a diverse assortment of cotton scrap fabrics. The piece features a pattern of elongated hexagons, frequently referred to as coffin blocks or stretched hexagons, which are hand-pieced together in horizontal rows. The fabrics include various calico prints, floral patterns, ginghams, and checks, with a large section of the lower portion composed of a red and white striped material. The assembly is characterized by coarse, visible hand-stitching in white thread, typical of utility or folk-art textiles. The piece consists only of the pieced top layer and lacks a backing, batting, or binding. The edges are raw and unfinished.
