Description
86 x 86 This antique American strip quilt dates from the late 19th to early 20th century, approximately 1880-1910. The top is constructed of alternating horizontal bands of two printed cotton calico fabrics. One fabric features a light tan ground decorated with small, repeating floral sprigs in chocolate brown and white. The second fabric is a complex border or pillar print on a dark brown ground, containing multiple narrow ornamental stripes with geometric cloverleaf-in-square motifs and fine-line grid patterns. The reverse side is composed of a dark brown or plum-colored fabric featuring a small-scale white hatch or dashed grid pattern. The piece is hand-pieced and hand-quilted throughout with fine, regular running stitches that create a textured surface. The earthy color palette of browns, tans, and creams is characteristic of madder or chocolate prints popular in American quilt-making during the late Victorian era.
