Description

68 x 74 This hand-quilted utility quilt is constructed in an improvisational strip-pieced style, often referred to as a hired man quilt. The top is composed of vertical columns of scrap fabrics in a dark palette of navy blue, charcoal, chocolate brown, deep burgundy, and tan. The fabrics appear to be salvaged from men suiting and workwear, featuring pinstripes and subtle textures in cotton and potentially wool-blend materials. The reverse side is a uniform small-scale check fabric in charcoal and white. The entire surface is hand-quilted with diagonal parallel lines. The style and construction are characteristic of late 19th to mid-20th century North American domestic textiles, resembling those produced by Mennonite communities and other rural groups.
