66 x 86 An antique American cotton quilt top, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. This unfinished quilt top, often referred to as a flimsy, is entirely hand-pieced in an improvisational utility style. The composition features distinct sections utilizing various traditional patterns, including diamond-in-the-square or postage stamp blocks, vertical string-pieced strips, and checkerboard motifs. The piece is constructed from a wide array of period textiles, including indigo-dyed prints, small-scale calicos, woven ginghams, and diverse shirting stripes. The reverse side exhibits raw seam allowances, confirming that the top was never assembled into a finished quilt with batting or a backing layer.
