Description

A trio of contemporary hardcover volumes concerning the life and death of U.S. President William McKinley, published in the immediate aftermath of his assassination in 1901. The first volume is the Memorial Edition of Complete Life of William McKinley and Story of His Assassination by Marshall Everett, bound in blue-green cloth with ornate gilt-stamped scrolling decorations and a central inset oval portrait. This edition claims to contain every incident in the career of the president and is profusely illustrated with photographs, including the assassination scene. The second item is a salesman’s prospectus for the Illustrious Life of William McKinley Our Martyred President by Murat Halstead. Bound in tan cloth with black and gold stamped decorations and a central portrait, it includes a Special Notice to Agents and the Public detailing the preparation of the full memorial volume. The third work is The Life of William McKinley: Soldier, Statesman and President by John W. Tyler, published by P. W. Ziegler and Co. of Philadelphia and Chicago. It includes an introduction by Honorable James Rankin Young and memorial tributes by prominent national figures. All three works are presented in quarto format with decorative cloth bindings characteristic of turn-of-the-century subscription publishing.
