Description
A group of four ethnographic objects including a West African ceremonial spoon, a carved wooden staff, and two knives with wooden sheaths. The large ceremonial feast spoon, in the style of the Dan people of Liberia or Ivory Coast, is carved from dark-stained hardwood. The handle terminal is shaped into a stylized human head featuring a vertically ridged coiffure and slit eyes, supported by a neck with incised geometric cross-hatching. The carved wooden staff or drumstick features a terminal head with simplified recessed facial features and a weathered, irregular shaft. Two knives with matching wooden sheaths are present; while handwritten collector tags identify these as Middle Eastern, the blade profiles and carved hilt styles are visually consistent with Southeast Asian types, specifically Philippine or Indonesian Bolo and Sundang knives. The first knife features a light-colored wood handle with a hooked pommel and a matching sheath fitted with fiber cord bindings. The second knife has a dark wood handle and a curved steel blade with a plain light-colored wood sheath. Items are accompanied by handwritten tags with dates ranging from the 1890s to the 1920s.
