Description

This is a Victorian-era wall-mounted double match holder, cast in iron with a high-relief hunting motif. The decorative backplate features a suspended rabbit on the left and a game bird on the right. Centered between the animals is a coiled hunting horn, topped by foliate elements resembling oak leaves. The base contains two semi-circular pockets for holding matches, decorated with a diamond-lattice pattern. A rope-twist border runs along the bottom edge of the pocket section. The reverse of the item bears cast lettering that reads PAT D SEPT 27. 1870. This patent date is commonly associated with American-made decorative cast iron hardware from the post-Civil War period. A contemporary price mark of 125.00 is written in black marker on the reverse.
