Lot 562:
Description
This pair of carriage-style wall lamps was commissioned for the Wells, Fargo and Co. Express San Francisco Division. Each lamp is constructed from mixed metals, including brass and copper, with a natural aged patina. The central cylinder of each lamp contains a spring-loaded mechanism designed to push a candle upward as it is consumed. The clear glass cylindrical chimneys are secured by decorative, pierced metal galleries at the top and bottom, along with a central horizontal sliding collar. The metalwork features intricate stamped openwork patterns typical of late 19th-century industrial and commercial design. Each lamp is fitted with a substantial cast metal wall-mounting bracket featuring double keyhole slots for installation. A shield-shaped brass plaque is applied to the front of each cylinder, bearing the following transcription: Property of [Diamond logo containing letters W. F. and Co.] Wells, Fargo and Co. Express San Francisco Division.
