Description
This antique American dome-top steamer trunk, also known as a humpback trunk, is a representative example of late 19th-century Victorian era travel luggage. The trunk is constructed with a wooden body covered in a textured gray-blue canvas. It is reinforced by a series of horizontal oak slats and vertical metal strapping, all secured with heavy-duty rivets. Hardware includes thick cast-metal corner guards and strap-end protectors. The front is fitted with a central cast-metal lock plate and two flanking spring-loaded latches. The side handles are thick leather replacements. The interior has been refurbished and lined with blue patterned paper or fabric. The underside of the lid features a central decorative panel trimmed with white lace and pink satin ribbons, surrounding an oval print of a young woman sewing. There are no clearly legible manufacturer marks or patent dates on the lock or latches.
