June Antiques and Collectibles Consignment
Lot 76:
Description
This cast composition sculpture, dated 1979, portrays a Native American chief in a traditional feathered headdress mounted on a horse. The figure is positioned with the right hand shading the eyes while the left hand holds a rifle resting across the horses neck. The figure is dressed in fringed garments and a necklace, with a round shield featuring a relief-carved feather motif secured to the horses flank. The sculpture is rendered with a dark, bronze-colored surface finish accented by metallic gold-toned highlights. The integral base, depicting rocky terrain, includes incised text that reads CHIEF followed by an illegible word, then D. MONFORT and a copyright symbol with the date 1979. Visual evidence from surface damage reveals a white interior material, consistent with hydrocal or a similar cast plaster compound. Dimensions: Not provided.
