June Antiques and Collectibles Consignment
Lot 67:
Description
This late 19th-century Victorian coal scuttle, or purdonium, is constructed of joined sheet metal panels with a black japanned finish. The item features a sloped, two-part hinged lid and a metal carrying handle at the top, elevated on four cast metal lion-paw feet. The exterior is decorated with gilded scrollwork and intertwined geometric borders. A large central oval medallion on the front depicts a colonial-style landscape with figures, a prominent palm tree, and a building. The lid is divided into two sections featuring a hand-painted floral bouquet and an oval portrait of a woman in traditional dress. Each side panel contains a smaller oval vignette, including a pastoral scene with sheep grazing. The interior retains a reddish-brown finish with general oxidation throughout.
