Description

84×92 This is a vintage American hand-quilted patchwork quilt in the traditional Dresden Plate pattern. The quilt features twenty-five Dresden Plate motifs organized in a five-by-five grid. Each circular motif consists of radiating wedges in alternating pastel pink and blue fabrics with small-scale floral and polka dot prints. These motifs are hand-appliqued onto a white cotton ground, and the centers of the plates are left as white circles. The quilt is finished with a continuous sawtooth or prairie-point border made from the same blue floral fabric seen in the central design. The item exhibits extensive hand-quilting throughout. The white background spaces are filled with echo quilting that follows the shape of the Dresden Plates, and decorative quilted floral or wreath-like medallions are stitched into the larger negative spaces between motifs. The reverse side shows small, regular running stitches consistent with hand-quilting techniques. The top, backing, and binding appear to be made of cotton or a cotton-blend fabric with a thin layer of batting. A small paper tag pinned to the top edge bears the inventory number 543.
