Description
58 x 76 This is a hand-quilted and cross-stitched bed quilt or coverlet of American origin. The item is constructed from a white cotton or cotton-blend fabric base featuring extensive hand-worked cross-stitch embroidery in a palette of orange, yellow, forest green, and taupe. The central decorative motif is a symmetrical folk-art Tree of Life design emerging from a heart-shaped base with stylized tulips and flowers. This central panel is surrounded by a continuous border of small orange blossoms and green vines. Distributed throughout the white field are four green eight-pointed stars, two birds perched on berry branches, and a floral basket at the bottom center. The entire textile is hand-quilted with a diagonal diamond grid pattern. In one corner, the piece features embroidered digits indicating the date of completion as 1961. The reverse side is plain white fabric, showing the texture of the hand-stitched quilting.
