Antiques Quilts and Toppers
Lot 70:
Description
58 x 76 An American hand-pieced and hand-quilted cotton patchwork quilt executed in the traditional Grandmother’s Flower Garden pattern. The quilt top is composed of numerous hexagonal floral blocks, each consisting of a central hexagon surrounded by six colored petal hexagons and an outer border of white hexagons. The design utilizes a wide variety of period-appropriate cotton printed fabrics including floral patterns, ginghams, stripes, solids, and a novelty print featuring small panda figures on a blue striped ground. The entire piece is hand-quilted with small stitches that follow the geometric lines of the patchwork. The wide white borders feature elaborate hand-quilted designs of concentric circles and scalloped patterns. The reverse consists of a plain white cotton backing with a vertical center seam. A modern paper inventory tag is pinned to the top edge.
