Antiques Quilts and Toppers
Lot 58:
Description
72 x 86 An American utilitarian quilt featuring hand-pieced Bears Paw variation blocks set on point. The blocks alternate with large squares of light blue and white floral sprig-print cotton calico. The pieced blocks consist of various navy and indigo blue cotton fabrics including polka dots, small florals, paisleys, and striped shirting prints, contrasted against cream and white ground fabrics. The reverse side is finished with a blue and white gingham check cotton backing. The three layers are secured by pink yarn ties or tufts placed at regular intervals across the surface rather than traditional decorative quilting stitches. One block in the lower corner utilizes a different set of fabrics than the others, likely indicating a period repair or a variation in fabric supply during original construction.
