Description

This antique rotary barrel butter churn was manufactured by the Standard Churn Company of Wapakoneta, Ohio. The item consists of a wooden barrel constructed from vertical staves held together by three black-painted iron hoops. The barrel is mounted horizontally on a four-legged wooden floor stand. A large cast-iron hand crank with a turned wooden handle is attached to the side for rotating the barrel. The top of the barrel features a circular cast-iron lid that is embossed with the maker information. The transcription of the lid reads STANDARD CHURN CO. WAPAKONETA OHIO with the number 40 embossed at the bottom. The assembly includes matching cast-iron axle mounts on both sides of the barrel to facilitate rotation within the frame.
