Description
This handheld advertising fan was produced for Honest Snuff, a brand of the American Snuff Company. The piece is constructed from lithographed cardstock with a split bamboo loop handle secured by metal staples. The front side features a color lithographic illustration of an elderly couple; the woman holds an Honest Snuff placard, and the man reads a newspaper with a tobacco advertisement. Small text at the bottom right reads Courtesy of Nation’s Business, Washington, D. C. and a patent mark at the bottom center reads PAT. NO. 1,534,405. The reverse side contains a sixteen-month calendar covering September 1935 through December 1936. It also features an illustration of the American Snuff Company factory in Memphis, Tennessee, identified as the largest snuff factory in the world. Additional promotional text describes the Standard of Mild Snuffs and the curing process used by the company.
