Description

This antique bulk store display tin was produced for the Sweet Mist brand of chewing tobacco, manufactured by the Scotten Dillon Company of Detroit, Michigan. The rectangular container is constructed of lithographed tin and features a separate fitted metal lid. The front panel is decorated with a mustard-yellow field containing a central circular vignette that depicts three children in robes playing around an ornate, multi-tiered water fountain. The brand name Sweet Mist is prominently displayed in stylized, drop-shadowed lettering above the illustration, with the text Chewing Tobacco and the manufacturer’s name and location at the bottom. The side panels feature a repeating orange cross-hatched pattern with a central diamond-shaped logo stating 48 Sweet Mist Fine Cut 5 Cent Packages. A manufacturing mark along the bottom edge of a side panel reads American Can Co. Pat. May 20, 1913, indicating the tin was produced by the American Can Company using a patented 1913 design. The side panels are secured with visible metal staples.
