Description

This is a hand-painted desktop display model of the Granville Brothers Aircraft Gee Bee Model R-1 Super Sportster, a famous 1930s racing aircraft piloted by Jimmy Doolittle. The model is constructed from carved wood, likely mahogany, featuring a hand-painted gloss finish in the iconic red and white scalloped livery. The design captures the aircraft’s distinctive teardrop fuselage, oversized Pratt & Whitney Wasp radial engine cowling, and small cockpit set far back toward the tail. The model includes fine rigging wires connecting the wings to the fuselage and the fixed landing gear spats. It is mounted on a turned wooden display stand via a metal support rod. The three-blade propeller is finished in silver-tone paint with yellow tips. Markings include the registration NR2100 on the top of the right wing and both sides of the vertical tail fin. The racing number 11 appears on the top of the left wing and both sides of the fuselage, where it is flanked by red and white dice graphics. A stylized Gee Bee script logo is located on the rear fuselage. The engine cowling is marked with 7-11 and Wasp in script. No manufacturer marks are visible.
