Description
This lot comprises two ceramic vessels of differing styles and materials. The first is a Japanese-style earthenware vase, categorized as Satsuma ware, featuring an ovoid body, twin handles molded as dragon heads, a flared rim, and a short foot. The exterior is finished in a butterscotch-colored glaze with hand-painted decoration in raised polychrome enamels and gilt. The primary motifs consist of maple leaves and floral blossoms, while the neck and foot are bordered by geometric patterns, including a honeycomb design containing floral medallions. The underside of the foot is unglazed and bears two hand-brushed black characters: a vertical line with a horizontal stroke "?" and a vertical line with three horizontal strokes "?", which do not correspond to a readable manufacturer’s name. The unglazed, flat underside features an incised script signature that is obscured by the glaze application and surface wear; a cursive "M" and "H" are partially discernible but the full name is not legible.Measurements/notes: Pair; 12 in. and 10 in.
