Description
A collection of historical military volumes focusing on the Spanish-American War and World War II. The group features several prominent titles of 20th-century wartime journalism and photography. Included is Brave Men by Ernie Pyle, published by Grosset and Dunlap, New York. The title page bears a green printed laurel wreath, and the copyright page indicates a copyright date of 1943 and 1944 by Ernest Taylor Pyle, noting this volume as a tenth printing from May 1945. A printed publisher mark consisting of the letters G and D flanking a thistle design in a circle is present. The volume retains its original illustrated dust jacket featuring a portrait of the author. Also present is Up Front by Bill Mauldin, published by The World Publishing Company, Cleveland and New York, by arrangement with Henry Holt and Company, Inc. The title page includes black and white character illustrations of two soldiers. The copyright page states a sixth printing in August 1945 and features a printed HW monogram. A two-volume set of Eyes of the War: A Photographic Report of World War II is included, compiled and edited by Nat Hyman and published by Telpic Sales, Inc., New York. One volume features a red cloth cover labeled Vol. II, containing 400 battle photos, while the second volume is bound in blue cloth and contains 612 battle photos. Both volumes indicate a 1945 copyright. Representing the Spanish-American War era is Greater America, published by F. Tennyson Neely, New York and London, 1898. This landscape-oriented volume serves as a photographic record and includes portraits of Rear-Admiral George W. Dewey and Major-General Joseph Wheeler. Completing the collection is Young Peoples History of the War with Spain by Prescott Holmes, part of the Altemus Young Peoples Library published by Henry Altemus Company, Philadelphia, copyright 1900. The decorative cloth cover depicts a sailor and a naval vessel. A handwritten gift inscription on the front flyleaf in red and black ink reads: This book is the property of Clarence L. Dresser, followed by Presented to Clarence L. Dresser from his S. S. teacher miss L. W. John, for regular attendance. June 18, 1905. The interior contains a printed portrait of Theodore Roosevelt in uniform.
