Description
A pair of large-format illustrated volumes focusing on mid-19th-century American life and early 20th-century international travel. The first volume is titled Currier and Ives’ America, edited by Colin Simkin and published by Crown Publishers, Inc., New York. This edition contains eighty full-color reproductions of lithographic prints depicting a panorama of the mid-nineteenth-century scene. Visible color plates include American Homestead Spring, Prairie Fires of the Great West, Speeding on the Avenue, Life in the Country, Autumn in New England, American Hunting Scenes: A Good Chance, and Wild Duck Shooting. The book is bound in tan boards with a blue cloth-covered spine. The second volume is titled Pictures of the Old World, featuring writings from various authors and numerous photographic views. It was published by P. F. Collier and Son, New York, in MCMIV (1904). The interior features black-and-white photographic plates of various European and Middle Eastern locations, including Florence (Cathedral and Giotto’s Bell-Tower, Ponte Vecchio, and Old Palace), Turkey (Mosque of Saint Sophia and Mosque of Ahmed), and Germany (Castle of Laufen and Falls of the Rhine). The volume is bound in brown boards with a black cloth spine.
