Description
A late 19th-century Victorian scrap album titled Scraps on the front cover. The volume is bound in brown cloth featuring elaborate gold-embossed floral and geometric decorations surrounding a central chromolithograph of a pug dog wearing a bib at a dinner table. The opening pages contain two handwritten ink inscriptions: one reading To Little Julia Easter 86 and another reading From Jessie April 25, ’86 Easter. The interior contains a large collection of multi-colored chromolithograph die-cut scraps and trade cards. The subject matter emphasizes anthropomorphic animals, including cats in military uniforms and Victorian finery, monkeys performing domestic chores, and a group of various dog breeds seated around a council table. A Pears Soap advertising scrap is present, captioned You Dirty Boy. Other illustrative themes include floral wreaths, domestic and wild animals such as deer and elephants, and humorous caricatures. Notable inclusions are loose cards depicting children in sailor suits hatching from eggs and a caricature of a man riding an ostrich. Visible text on various scraps includes Accept this Gift, HOPE IS MY STAR, MY HEART IS THINE, and PUSS IN BOOTS. A later mid-20th-century circular adhesive sticker of Pope John XXIII, labeled JOHN XXIII 1958-1963, is affixed to one page.
