Description
This late 19th-century crayon portrait is rendered in charcoal and pastel over a light photographic base on toned paper. The subject is a woman shown in a chest-length view, facing forward. Her dark hair is parted in the center and styled back away from her face. She is dressed in Victorian-era attire, consisting of a dark garment with a high, ruffled white collar and a dark ribbon necktie held by a small, round pin at the center. The technique is characteristic of realist solar enlargements popular in the United States during the late 1800s, where charcoal and pastel were used to enhance and finish a faint photographic print. The work is presented in a wide, ornate gilded frame featuring a repeating molded pattern of palmettes and scrolled foliage between beaded and gadrooned borders. No signatures, dates, or inscriptions are visible on the front of the portrait or the frame.21×25. Tear in left corner.
