Description
A heavy-gauge forged steel railroad torch, also known as a switchman’s torch or rail thawer, utilized in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The torch features a conical body with a wide circular base and a curved strap handle riveted to one side. A long, angled cylindrical spout is integrated into the lower portion of the cone and contains a thick, fibrous cotton wick. The top of the cone terminates in a narrow, threaded neck designed for a screw-on filler cap. The exterior surface has a dark, heavily oxidized finish. The center of the underside of the base shows a small, irregular fragment of beige adhesive residue, though no text or markings are legible on it. There are no maker marks, brand names, or manufacturer logos visible on the body, handle, or base. Height to top of threaded neck: 8.5 inches Total height to tip of spout: 9.25 inches Base diameter: 7 inches.
