Lot 87:
Description
A hand-carved Japanese ivory okimono depicting Hotei, one of the Seven Lucky Gods. The figure is rendered in a seated position with a laughing expression and a large belly, holding a traditional cloth sack over his left shoulder. The garment is decorated with incised patterns including cross-hatched shapes and stylized foliage, which have been highlighted with a dark stain for contrast. The ivory displays characteristic Schreger lines on the polished surfaces of the head and body. The figure is mounted on a separate, custom-fitted dark-stained wooden base featuring scalloped edges and carved foliate motifs. No signatures or maker marks are visible on the exterior of the figure or the base. 2×2
