Description

This circular wooden mask is a contemporary handcrafted decorative piece from Ghana, known as the Kunimdu model. It is hand-carved from wood and finished with a thick, granular composition paste that creates a pocked texture across the surface. The face is defined by two large, recessed eye orbits outlined by raised, beaded borders. Small horizontal slits are provided for vision, accompanied by small raised oval details. The forehead features a relief-carved frog, a traditional symbol of fertility and transformation, rendered with the same textured finish and two red-pigmented eyes. A prominent, protruding open mouth is positioned at the base of the mask. The surface is decorated with polychrome bands in shades of forest green, tan, terracotta, and black. The reverse is concave and shows dark-stained wood with visible hand-chisel marks. A partial white rectangular label is affixed to the back, showing the beginning of the word HANDCRAFTED. A metal wire hanging loop is stapled to the top, and a modern auction barcode label is present on the lower half. 12 in diameter
