Description
This lot consists of two hand-carved wooden figurines with polychrome painted decoration representing different regional folk traditions. The first figure depicts a standing male smoking a long pipe, dressed in Highland ethnic attire including a tiered cap and a tunic with incised geometric patterns. The reverse of the figure features a carved backpack. The second figure is of Balinese origin and is depicted in a crouching prayerful pose known as anjali mudra. This figure wears a gilded udeng headcloth, a red bindu on the forehead, and a sarong with a black and tan geometric pattern. Both figures are fixed to integral rectangular wooden bases and date to the 20th century. 18 in.
