Description
This lot features two relief-decorated stoneware beer steins manufactured by Simon Peter Gerz. The first stein has a 1.5-liter capacity and displays a tavern interior scene with hunters, a serving woman, and a dog. Two side cartouches contain German inscriptions in a blackletter script: Pfl?cket die Rose Eh’ sie verbl?ht (Pluck the rose before it fades) and Freut euch des Lebens Weil noch das L?mpchen gl?ht (Rejoice in life while the little lamp still glows). The base is stamped Western Germany and 1 1/2 Ltr with an incised triangle mark containing a pitcher. The second stein features a wrap-around tavern brawl scene with men fighting and others playing cards on a barrel. This stein includes a handle molded in the form of a gnarled tree branch. It is stamped with model number 3250 on the body and Made in Germany on the base, which also bears the Gerz triangle mark. Both steins are decorated with multi-colored hand-painted glazes on a dark cobalt blue ground. 10.5 in
