Description

This is a single issue of the folio-formatted periodical World’s Columbian Exposition Illustrated, dated March 1893 (Vol. III, No. 1, Whole No. 25). Published by J. B. Campbell in Chicago, the journal served as an official promotional and historical record of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. The front cover features a color lithographic illustration of Christopher Columbus surrounded by allegorical figures representing Miss Columbia and Miss Chicago. The interior consists of approximately 30 pages comprising text and a wealth of contemporary illustrations, including wood engravings and halftone photographs. Subject matter includes architectural views of the Horticultural Building and the Peristyle, as well as anthropological and archaeological exhibits such as the Esquimaux Village and the ruins of Uxmal. The journal is notable for its extensive period advertising for consumer and industrial products, including Pratt’s Pocket Battery, Barler’s Ideal Oil Heater, and the Davis Vertical Feed Sewing Machine. The masthead and cover prominently state that the publication received the official endorsement of the World’s Columbian National Commission. The item is presented in a protective plastic sleeve. 11 x15
