Description
A set of four Chinese shadowbox relief pictures representing the four seasons, likely produced as export decorative art in the mid-20th century. Each scene is constructed with high-relief carved mother-of-pearl and abalone shell elements mounted against a black background. Specific details like pagoda rooftops and various types of foliage are highlighted with red, green, and pink tinting. The backgrounds feature painted mountain silhouettes. Each panel is inscribed in an upper corner with a single Chinese character for the corresponding season: ? (Xia – Summer), ? (Dong – Winter), ? (Qiu – Autumn), and ? (Chun – Spring). The Winter panel includes a small red square seal mark beneath the character. Each picture is housed in a black-finished wood frame with a glass front and an ornate metal hanging bracket at the top.
