Description
This pair of 1-quart hand-pump fire extinguishers was manufactured by the Pyrene Manufacturing Company of Newark, New Jersey. Each unit features a cylindrical body constructed of brass and copper with a cast brass or bronze T-handle and nozzle assembly. The first extinguisher is a standard 1-quart model bearing serial number U-283595 and Underwriters’ Laboratories classification B-2; C-2. The second extinguisher is identified as a Heavy Vehicle Type with serial number U 45578 and classification C-2. The labels provide detailed operating instructions for turning the handle to the left and working it like a pump. Warnings on the labels indicate the original contents included carbon tetrachloride and advise against using water or other substitutes. Patent numbers 1,688,195 and 2,347,548 are present on both units, suggesting a production date in the mid-20th century, post-1944. The manufacturer’s plate lists regional offices in Atlanta, Chicago, Kansas City, and San Francisco. Approximately 14 inches height by 3 inches diameter.
