Description

This lot features two examples of American late 19th to early 20th-century off-hand calligraphic flourishing. Both works are executed in pen and ink on toned paper, a decorative art form derived from the Spencerian method of penmanship. The primary work is a framed drawing depicting a bird in flight, created with characteristic rhythmic, sweeping lines. It features a handwritten inscription in fine script at the bottom right reading Compliments of J. French to Miss Hazel Barber. Culver, Ind. and a flourished motif in the lower left corner. The second work is an unframed card depicting a bird perched on a branch, executed in a similar style. The framed piece is housed in a dark-stained wood frame. A label on the verso of the frame reads 7.4.80 J. Spencerian Callig. 9.5×6.5
