Description
This lot comprises an assortment of five hardcover octavo volumes bound in original publisher’s cloth, primarily focusing on mathematics and language instruction from the early to mid-20th century. The collection includes: Schorling, Clark, and Smith, Second-Year Algebra, World Book Company, 1942; Ruch, Knight, and Studebaker, Study Arithmetics Grade Eight, Scott, Foresman and Company, 1942; Virgil S. Mallory, New Plane Geometry Revised Edition, Benj. H. Sanborn and Co., 1943; S. Alge, Walter Rippmann, and Walter H. Buell, Newson’s Second French Book, Newson and Company, 1901; and Useful Mathematics, attributed to Dunn, Allen, and Goldthwaite, Ginn and Company, circa 1930s-1940s. The bindings are executed in green, brown, and red cloth with stamped titles and decorative school-themed motifs, such as a compass on the Useful Mathematics volume and student figures on the Study Arithmetics cover. Internal contents feature instructional text, mathematical diagrams, and foreign language lessons. Several volumes contain significant student-added provenance in the form of handwritten signatures and inscriptions including names such as Reese Jones, Charles Jehl, Leonard Couser, Betty Chick, and Jake Miller. An ephemeral Miller Equipment Construction receipt is tucked into the Algebra volume.
