Description
15x17x11This antique butter churn features a horizontal barrel or cylinder-style body constructed of wooden staves. The staves are secured by two iron bands that wrap the circumference of the unit. The exterior is finished in an aged orange-yellow paint. The churn is supported by four integrated wooden feet. A central metal axle runs through the barrel, connected to a cast iron hand crank with a turned wooden grip. The interior is accessed via a rectangular hopper-style opening at the top and contains a wooden dasher assembly composed of a rotating frame designed to agitate cream. A small drainage hole is located at the bottom edge of one end cap for the removal of buttermilk. While similar in design to models produced by the Richmond Cedar Works, this example bears no visible manufacturer marks or patent dates.
