Description
1.5 inches tall. This Japanese netsuke depicts a seated male figure, identified as a merchant or accountant, holding a soroban (abacus). The figure is rendered in a seated position upon a round base, wearing traditional garments. Details such as the facial features, the chonmage hairstyle, and the grid of the abacus are highlighted with a dark pigment against the cream-colored body of the piece. The material exhibits a polished surface with a warm, aged patina. The reverse features two himotoshi (cord holes) used for attaching the netsuke to a sash. A two-character mark is incised on the underside, though the signature is not distinctly legible.
