Description
This lot comprises a two-volume set of The History of Napoleon Bonaparte by John S. C. Abbott, published in New York by Harper & Brothers in 1855. The volumes are bound in contemporary half-leather with brown cloth boards. The spines feature raised bands and are decorated with stamped motifs, including the Napoleonic bee. The work contains various maps and illustrations, including a steel-engraved frontispiece portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte by F. Halpin after the painting by Paul Delaroche. The title page for each volume bears the publisher’s imprint for 329 & 331 Pearl Street, Franklin Square. An early leaf in the first volume contains a handwritten ink provenance inscription that reads: Joseph Russell from his Aunt Bleecker Christmas 1855.
