Description
This lot consists of two pieces of matte-finished sage green stoneware featuring white applied relief decoration in the jasperware style. The collection includes a rectangular wall plaque and a cylindrical lidded canister. The wall plaque is a vertical hanging piece with an ornate, openwork border decorated with stylized edelweiss flowers and foliate motifs. The central relief depicts a rustic interior genre scene showing a man in Alpine-style attire, including a hat with a feather, conversing with a woman seated opposite him who is winding yarn from a handheld reel. A small cat is visible at the woman’s feet. The reverse of the plaque bears a small impressed mark with the numerals 20. The cylindrical canister features a fitted lid topped with a spherical finial. The body is decorated with classical allegorical and sacrificial scenes in relief, including a central figure of Cupid on a pedestal, women holding birds and vessels, and a flaming altar. The lid is decorated with a central radiating leaf motif and a surrounding laurel leaf wreath. The green ground of both items exhibits minor dark speckling inherent to the clay body. The base of the jar is unmarked. Jar is 4 inches and plate is 7.5×4.5
