Antiques Quilts and Toppers
Lot 399:
Description
56 x 76 An antique American hand-pieced and hand-quilted cotton patchwork quilt in a variation of the Schoolhouse pattern. The quilt is comprised of twenty-four individual house blocks arranged in a four-by-six grid. The house motifs are rendered in various indigo blue cotton fabrics, including solid, small-scale floral, and geometric prints. These are set against a cream ground fabric with small blue polka dots. The blocks are separated by pink sashing featuring a red floral and paisley calico print. The cornerstones of the sashing alternate between the pink calico and the blue-dot cream fabric. The reverse side is constructed from a brown and white striped ticking-style cotton fabric. The quilt exhibits hand-stitching throughout, with simple parallel-line quilting across the blocks and sashing. The edges are finished with a thin indigo blue fabric binding. The interior contains natural cotton batting.
