Description

74 x 76 This hand-pieced and hand-quilted American folk art string quilt is constructed from a variety of mid-century cotton and cotton-blend fabric remnants. The design features twelve square blocks arranged in a three-by-four grid, each containing diagonally oriented fabric strips in various prints including plaids, ginghams, florals, and solids. The blocks are joined by red and white gingham sashing. The piece is bordered by a green floral print on the left and right sides, with an additional variegated scrap border along the far right edge made of rectangular remnants. The quilting is executed by hand in a fan or clamshell pattern using a contrasting red thread that is clearly visible on the reverse. The backing consists of a light tan or off-white cotton muslin.
