Description
40 x 46 This mid-20th century American folk art tied patchwork quilt, also known as a comforter, features a complex scrap-style design. The central motif consists of a large, gathered fan or skirt-shaped field made from hundreds of small rectangular fabric remnants, resembling a postage stamp pattern, arranged in horizontal rows. This central section is set against a background of larger, irregularly shaped fabric panels in a simplified crazy quilt arrangement. The textile incorporates a wide variety of mid-century cotton and cotton-blend prints, including florals, polka dots, ginghams, stripes, and geometric patterns typical of 1930s through 1950s feed sack and dressmaking remnants. Rather than traditional quilted stitching, the layers are secured by grey yarn ties visible across the surface. The construction shows both machine and hand-stitched patchwork. The quilt is finished with a white cotton muslin backing and a simple white fabric binding.
