Antiques Quilts and Toppers
Lot 380:
Description
84 x 88 This antique American quilt is hand-pieced and hand-quilted in a traditional Bears Paw pattern, which is also known as Ducks Foot or Hand of Friendship. The design features twenty pieced blocks set on point in a staggered arrangement. The blocks are constructed from various indigo-dyed cotton calico fabrics, including blue-and-white stripes and small-scale geometric prints. A notable feature is the humility block located in the bottom right corner, which is pieced from a contrasting dark grey and white patterned fabric. The white cotton ground is densely hand-quilted with a fine diagonal diamond-grid pattern. The reverse side consists of a plain white cotton backing. The materials and construction methods are characteristic of American textile production from the mid-to-late 19th century.
