Description
84 x 96 A hand-pieced cotton quilt top in the Grandmother’s Flower Garden pattern, dating from approximately 1930 to 1940. This unfinished textile consists of the pieced top layer only, without batting, backing, or quilting stitches. The design features hexagonal fabric patches arranged into floral motifs, with each flower typically featuring a central hexagon surrounded by two rows of petals. These units are set within a white hexagonal grid and separated by a path or lattice of solid forest green hexagons. The top is constructed from various cotton fabrics, including solid colors in purple, yellow, orange, and green, as well as numerous printed feed sack style fabrics characteristic of the mid-20th century. The piece is entirely hand-sewn, with visible hand-stitching and raw seam allowances on the reverse side. The outer edges are raw and unhemmed.
